Dr. Janusz Korczak
One of
the sites we visited today was the Jewish Cemetery. Here, we saw a statue of Dr. Korczak. Seeing this statue reminded me of his
heroic story, refusing to let orphans go into the ghetto alone. He also went
with them to the death camp, Treblinka, where they were all murdered.
Dr.
Korczak’s story reminded me of the great risks many Poles and others took in order
to help the Jews and other victims survive the war. Dr. Korczak wanted to help
children get through the time of Nazi occupation in Warsaw so they could live
their lives without being treated like animals. Dr.Korczak had a chance to
leave the ghetto but he decided to stay behind with the children. As they were
being deported, he stayed by their sides until the very end.
His
sacrifice will be remembered for years to come. His bravery is a symbol of
defiance against the Nazis. He is a testament to the power of passive
resistance, and the role it played against the Nazis. Thanks to Dr.Korczak’s marching
and singing with the children en route to the deportation trains, they did not fear
death and were not alone in their final days.
